About the University and Department
Grand Valley State University is a liberal arts university of 23,500 students. The Department of Art and Design offers BA/BS and BFA programs in studio art with an emphasis in ceramics, graphic design, illustration, jewelry/metalsmithing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and visual studies. The department also offers a BA in Art History, and a BA/BS in Art Education.
There are approximately 350 majors, 27 full-time faculty (20 TT) and 6 part-time faculty, and support staff including a Visual Resource Curator, lab technician, and 3D technicians, housed in nearly 55,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities. The mission of the Department of Art and Design is to foster a dynamic learning environment that critically embraces traditional artistic areas as well as emerging technologies. Responsibilities
Teach three courses per semester in a NASAD accredited undergraduate program with approximately 350 majors, participate in portfolio reviews and student advising, provide leadership and vision in curricular development, participate in university and departmental committee work, and maintain an active research and professional practice.
Required Qualifications
- MFA in Graphic Design or related field by August 2009 required.
- Professional experience and/or prior teaching experience preferred.
- A combination of skills covering the following areas: typography, identity design, page layout, print production, and contemporary media (web design, motion graphics, interactive media, and video). Additional skills might also include letterpress, contemporary illustration, packaging, or exhibit design, and the ability to teach classes outside of the graphic design emphasis such as drawing, composition, etc.
- Background in historical and contemporary design literacy.

- MFA (or equivalent degree) with evidence of understanding and application of digital media in art and design.
- Experience in the use of and presentation of interactivity and time-based media in art contexts.
- Teaching experience required.
- Experience engaging in theory and practice relevant to Visual Studies.
- Evidence of successful experience in teaching studio classes and professional creative/research record.
- Successful candidates must be able to work and teach in digital media integrated with the other art and academic disciplines and in a manner relevant to a broader culture.
