- Presentation Software: University computers come installed with Powerpoint. The Department of Art and Design also supports Expression Media (formerly Iview Mediapro) for image management and presentation. All lab and instructor stations have it installed and the department owns a fixed number of licenses. If you need this for your teaching make a request to the Department Chairperson.
- Remote Controls: The Department has a fixed number of MIRA remote control setups. For Apple users the MIRA software enables the apple remote (standard feature with newer macs) to communicate with nearly any software by way of a remote IR signal. The department software comes configured for many programs including Expression Media (formerly Iview). All department Instructor Stations will have MIRA software and have an IR receiver and Apple remote there for your use. Please help maintain this system by keeping track of these items. Should you need to borrow either an Apple Remote or another IR receiver check with the Visual Resources Library. Any mac that is made prior to 2006 will not have the IR capability and will require the use of an IR reciever.
You will need one of these three options:
- MIRA software install - for Intel portable macs
- MIRA software and IR hardware (receiver and apple remote) - for older portables and non-Instructor desktops
- IR hardware (IR receiver and Apple Remote) for use at Instructor Station.
If you need this for your teaching make a request to the Department Chairperson and specify which option. If you use other platforms or have other needs let the Chairperson know.
Using MIRA
Graphics Software
The department has a fixed number of copies of the Adobe Suite CS 3. This includes the adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator . . .) plus the Macromedia set which includes Dreamweaver . . . If you need this software for your teaching and work please make a request to the Department Chair.
"DO" File Server
In addition to the Server space provided all students and faculty by the University, the department provides a local file server: do.art.gvsu.edu. Each student can use up to 1 gig of space, each faculty 5 gigs. This space is not backed up and is best used as temporary, work, or transfer space. There is a help page about the do server at:http://do.art.gvsu.edu. If you wish to set up an account see Paul or Shelley in the Visual Resources Library.
Digital Print Shop
The Department manages a digital print shop operated by student workers. The shop prints using the ultrachrome system from epson printing up to 42 inches wide in full color. The shop also has vinyl cutting machines and an inexpensive drawing machine that will print up to 48 inches wide. University students and faculty turn in jobs in a digital form and are charged by the square inch.
http://digitalprint.art.gvsu.edu!Visual Resources Library
The Department operates a Visual Resource Library for the preparation and management of Images and material for learning in Art and Design. The library can assist in giving faculty access to our existing resources and work with Faculty in the preparation of Visual Resources. The Library makes some of its resources available online for Students, Faculty and Staff within the environment of GVSU. These can be accessed at:http://glean.art.gvsu.edu.
STUDIOMACS Studio/Classroom Computers
Many studios in the Department have computers that are available for studio work and learning. These are distinct from Faculty, Lab, and Instructor Station Computers which are all supported and maintained by IT (Information Technology). The studio computers are now administered by the department and no longer by Information Technology. Each studio area should identify a staff or faculty member responsible for monitoring these machines. IT staff will provide support as appropriate. Hardware issues can be addressed by IT staff. Communicate with the Help desk on hardware matters.
Paul maintains a firewire hard drive with a disk image of the complete system and application setup for the studio macs. In the event of major problems or when there are significant changes the drive can be used to do a fresh installation. You will be able to make changes, but please inform Paul of suggested changes to the source disk image. The Drive will be stored in the Art Office and can be obtained from Barb or Pam.
The Studiomac disk image will come with 2 users:
- Openuser - is the username that anyone can use on these machines. There is no password for this user.
- AD admin - is the administrator username for these computers. Faculty and Staff who are monitoring these computers can obtain the password from Paul.
