RE-Imaging a Studiomac Computer
Many studios in the Department have computers that are available for studio work and learning. These are distinct from Faculty, Lab, and Instructor Station Computers which are all supported and maintained by IT (Information Technology). The studio computers are now administered by the department and no longer by Information Technology. Each studio area should identify a staff or faculty member responsible for monitoring these machines. IT staff will provide support as appropriate. Hardware issues can be addressed by IT staff. Communicate with the Help desk on hardware matters.
Paul maintains a firewire hard drive with disk images of the complete system and application setups for the studio macs. In the event of major problems or when there are significant changes the drive can be used to do a complete fresh installation. You will be able to make changes, but please inform Paul of suggested changes to the source disk images. The Drives will be stored in the Art Office and can be obtained from Barb or Pam.
The Studiomac disk image will come with 2 users:
- Openuser - is the username that anyone can use on these machines. There is no password for this user.
- AD admin - is the administrator username for these computers. Faculty and Staff who are monitoring these computers can obtain the password from Paul.
Installing a disk image on a Studiomac Computer from the Firewire Hard Drive
- Get the external hard drive with the Studiomac image you need for your machine (there are two drives- intel and ppc and various images on each drive).
- plug the firewire drive into the Studiomac and turn on the firewire drive.
- Boot (or reboot) the computer holding down the 'option' key. After a while you will be given a choice of systems to boot from. It takes a few minutes for the computer to check for viable boot disks.
- Select "boot drive" (as your startup drive) and click the right-facing arrow. The computer will show two external drives: 'boot drive' and 'AD Studiomac Images' in addition to the computers normal hard drive.
- open the "Netrestore" software found on the "boot drive".
- For your "source" click 'browse' and find the appropriate disk image for your computer type (ppc or intel) from "AD studiomac images".
- For your "target" choose the local computer's hard drive.
- Make sure 'Erase Target Disk' is selected. It is also good to select "verify restored disk".
- To do the Installation click on the lock and enter the administrator password then click "Restore".
- After the process is complete restart the computer and disconnect the firewire drive.
