Ann Hamilton

.::.Biography.::.

Ann Hamilton was born in 1956 in Lima, Ohio. She trained in textile design at the University of Kansas, and later received an MFA from Yale University. While her degree is in sculpture, textiles and fabric have continued to be an important part of her work, which includes installations, photographs, videos, performances, and objects. While her degree is in sculpture, textiles and fabric have continued to be an important part of her work, which includes installations, photographs, videos, performances, and objects.Hamilton’s sensual installations often combine evocative soundtracks with cloth, filmed footage, organic material, and objects such as tables. She is as interested in verbal and written language as she is in the visual, and sees the two as related and interchangeable.

The body in its vulnerability
is Ann Hamilton’s welle (detail seen below), a wall that
weeps barely visible beads of water, as if it were a functioning
body rather than an architectural element. Here she turns
architecture into a seemingly living membrane, reawakening
the viewer to otherwise conventional surrounds.

Welle, 1998

In 2001, Ann wished to capture the world from her mouth
by using tiny pinhole cameras-which she created herself.
Of her idea she states,
“…I started thinking about when you're really immersed
in what you're doing, often your mouth falls open, and
you know you're never supposed to have your mouth open
in public. Like you don't see people standing around,
you know. It's a vulnerable position; it's a place
where you've relaxed and you've let yourself be open
and vulnerable in a way. And so I started thinking, "Well,
I want to take my own picture in that situation."
These are a few of the pictures that resulted.
