Rachel Whiteread

Rachel Whiteread's work is truely unique with both a feeling of familiarity and strangeness.
She created molds from everyday objects that came from abandoned buildings and made them into art.

In the late 80's, Whiteread began making these casts out of household objects such as bathtubs, wardrobes, beds, sinks, and showed
more of the "private aspects of domestic life" in her work. She used many different materials, ranging from rubber to plaster to concrete.

Rachel Whiteread is considered to be a key figure in British sculpture. She is one of the few artists from her
generation who have created "monumental public sculptures". She was also awarded the Turner Prize after completing "House".
It was a life-size replica of a condemed house made by filling the interior with liquid concrete before the walls were removed.
