I am usually open for anything. When it was time for the Museum of Contemporary Art, I was anxious to see what it would hold inside. Dissapointed, I found myself not attatched to modern contemporary art. I have not been around contemporary art that much my life, so it was a new experience. I know that people have their different opinions on art and they are entitled to like anything they want. I however did not enjoy the museum as much as I would have hoped. I respect the artists and their emotions and time spent in their pieces, but I found myself not interested in some of the works. I did find one that caught my eye the most and I stopped in front of it for awhile and reflected.
The piece was a series of photograhs taken of kids in their early teens. Each picture exemplified the pressure and hardships of teenage life. For example, one of the pictures showed a boy sitting on a couch staring at a few bottles of alcohol. Another was a picture of a girl who looked like she was on drugs. A few of the pictures even showed girls and guys in bed with each other. This piece, or pieces, made me think a lot about the life young teenagers live today. I feel as if that generation is growing up way too fast. The constant thoughts of body image, sex, drugs, alcohol and peer pressure goes through these kids minds everyday. These are not problems that they should be facing at such a young age. Part of the description of the piece really caught my eye. It said, "It looks at aspects of our culture that many people would like to ignore or dismaw". I agree with that statement. Many people, particulary parents, have somewhat of an idea of whats going on, but they choose to ignore the problems. I feel as if we live in a society that makes us feel like we need to grow up way before it is time to.
As for the Art Institute of Chicago, I loved it. There were so many pieces that I liked. I love the feeling of seeing a piece of artwork in person after seeing it so many times in textbooks and in other readings. I thought the trip was so much fun and I look forward to going again sometime soon and for next year's trip.
