Massive Change Bruce Mau

- Final prints should be mounted on Black illustration board with a 1 inch border beyond the edge of the print (trimmed if the design calls for it). If Black does not work for your design, you can opt for white.
In advance of Bruce Mau's visit to GVSU, we are going to do a studio that steps into his studio process and the Massive Change project. Mau makes large claims for design as a central component in imagining and forming positive futures. In this idea of design, we as visual workers serve a central leadership role in work that crosses many distinct disciplines. Our visual skills and studio processes are useful for this complex work.
1. Go to the
Massive Change website. Read the intro 'what is massive change?'
2. Learn about all 11 design economies. Study the intro page for each of the 11. Understand them as a set.

- Markets
- Energy
- Materials
- Military
- Manufacturing
- Living
- Wealth & Politics
3. Pick 3 design economies (from the 11) and investigate them in depth. Read and study all of the material connected to these 3 "economies" on the Massive Change web site.
4. Follow the process laid out in the 'story formula' on the
Massive Change in Action website to develop your own solution to a real problem or to document an innovative solution to a problem. These can be factual and analytical, imaginative and inventive, or all of these.
Throughout the studio process pay attention to the visual and experiential as the primary focus of productive solutions and effective communication. Massive Change uses the idea of design economies to assure that the level of detail includes an interactive combination of people, things, and systems of value. Engage your problem at this level.
Determine which design economy your problem fits into, or propose a new design economy for it to fit into.
We will learn about working with image and text in Illustrator and each produce a tabloid size document about our project.
