Visual Arts :
Interlubricous
Through November 26
New York artists Richard Metzgar and Paul Bartow both received their Masters of Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting from the Rochester Institute of Technology and will display a collaborative installation entitled Interlubricous in the Race Street Gallery beginning October 20 through November 26. This piece explores the relationships of objects in the world, addressing affect, movement and intensity. As pieces that simultaneously create and disrupt space, “hybrids and infections are allowed to contaminate utilitarian modalities, thereby informing a structure of becoming.” The folds of both three dimensional and two dimensional modalities into each other unleash contradiction, leaving voids where lines of leakage are explored. Interlubricous addresses the question of what it means to rethink structure as agency, or as something other than utility driven.
Leslie Kendall Rech
Through November 26
South Carolina artist and South Carolina State University Professor Leslie Kendall Rech is interested in methods through which a three-dimensional environment can strengthen visual metaphors. She will install a site-specific exhibition in UICA’s In Space beginning October 20 through November 26. Rech believes that when an artist provides a distinct context for their work, she/he offers clues to lives of objects within the artist’s own mind. Rech uses mixed media installation as a vehicle for concepts involving sexuality, gender, femininity, history, tradition, desire and visual pleasure.
Juan Garcia & Erika Hanson
Through November 26
A recent college graduate, Juan Garcia received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in drawing at Calvin College. Erika Hanson is currently attending Kendall College of Art and Design and is working on obtaining her Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in drawing, as well as a Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in art history. Garcia and Hanson will be working together to create a collaborative body of art that will be displayed in the Front Street Gallery from October 20 through November 26. In these narrative drawings, the artists use ambiguous narrative elements to create a sort of alternate universe and a sense of allegory. The viewer is able to accept traditional pictorial elements such as landscapes or basic figures, but yet sense that something else may also be going on. Often depicting dark themes, these minimalist drawings provoke a sense of mystery by offering viewers several interpretations of the work.
