cranbrook academy of art
The Cranbrook Academy of Art is located in Bloomfield Hills, MI on Woodward Avenue. Admission to the program is extremely difficult, which is limited to only 150 graduate students. Grand Valley's Creative Problem Solving instructor, Professor Paul Wittenbraker, was one of these students. The program is two years long and you must enroll as a full-time student. At the Academy you can earn a Master of Architecture degree or a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2-D Design, 3-D Design, Ceramics, Fiber, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Print Media, and Sculpture. Each department contains fifteen students and one Department Head.
When applying to the Cranbrook Academy of Art, you must submit:
- A Statement of Purpose describing the investigations to be undertaken in graduate study
- An Autobiographical Sketch describing the applicant's personal history and development as an artist
- A portfolio containing examples (20 to 25 images) of the applicant's recent work. Slides in flat plastic slide sheets are preferred. Electronic media are acceptable.
- Official transcripts from all prior institutions of higher learning from which the applicant has earned a degree. International students must provide officially certified translations of transcripts in English.
- Three letters of reference from instructors, colleagues or others who know the applicant and the applicant's work. The Academy does not use special forms for recommendations. Letters should be written on the reference's own letterhead and delivered to the applicant for inclusion in the application package.
- Stamped, self-addressed envelope, or additional funds, for return of portfolio
The list of items to submit along with the Academy application comes directly from Cranbrook's website. Visit the Cranbrook Academy of Art website at
