I'm not sure how helpful it'll be as it's only a free trial, but it's pretty neat nonetheless:

http://www.visualthesaurus.com

Type in a word and it'll give you synonyms in a fancy visual web. The words nearest to the center are the most relevant and from there it branches out to make further connections to other words. Clearly, the best part is dragging the little word nodes around. Fun for the whole family!

For thursday the 28th be ready to report on your art historical images from the wordimage lecture.
Read and study the image and word project page and sources.
Select 3 each of the projects: word/word, image/image, word/image to present as possible finished projects.
Next time we'll regroup with more technical info and demos and do some mild critiquing. Next Tuesday we'll do a full-fledged critique.

Also watch/study the Mirror Neurons video. Be ready to talk about how this is relevant to our main question. How does it connect with our two readings? In particular why does this work not only with other people we watch, but also objects and inanimate things?

Great first week of studios for cps. I'm looking forward to a great semester. Don't forget the chicago payment. Several of you left your purple slips in the studio. Any with ss#'s on them I destroyed. If you need another there are a few around the studio or you can get another at the front desk.

A reminder for Thursday, Sept. 7th you should read and study the pink visual perception reading. Have the ideas in your mind ready to egage and use. Also I asked that you collect 10 images. These should be digital (preferably) on a camera, camera card, or removable media of your choice. They can come from digital camera or other digital sources. This is the first round of collecting images. We'll do this several times. I've given no specification about what the images should be. We'll get into that.

I'm very excited about the upcoming semester. We've laid a good ground upon which we can engage important ideas that are relevant to our shared practice in visual art. See you Thursday. -paul

WARNING
I keep forgetting to give you this warning. Our wiki is wide open. Anyone can edit or hack in. No big deal because we can always use the history function to back it up to the correct spot. BUt, some hackers and pranksters put PORN on such sites. So be warned - if you get on the wiki and there is PORN or other inappropriate media - please let me know asap. You can also help by taking it down. The only way to prevent this is to put a password on the wiki, which might not be a bad idea. It just changes the whole dynamic.

   Little Green Footballs

This blog was the first to critically examine memo's used to discredit George W. Bush and his completion of duties in the National Guard. They showed that the memo's, supposedly typed on a typewriter and thus authentic, were actually created using Microsoft Word. Lately, along with the England-based EU Referendum Blog, they have spearheaded criticism of photojournalistic practices in Lebanon as manipulative, staged and politically motivated. Please be aware that some images may be disturbing as they record the recovery and/or exploitation of casualties (you decide.)

The CPS web site will be run on a wiki. For more information about wikis check out the link at wikipedia. Wikis are collaborative software that operate in an open source manner. Using a wiki allows this space to be treated as a common area in which all participants can contribute to the groups focus; in our case learning about meaning in the professional practice of the visual. Over the time of the studio we'll build a knowledge base and record of our dialogue and inquiry. In this way it will be mediated or captured in a substance.
Remember to check this coweb swiki every couple of days. Check these three things:
  1. studioblog the thing you are reading is the CPS blog. Here I'll post important information or comments on things. You can start your own blog on your id pages. See the "help" page to see how it is done. (the studioblog originates on another page, but is shown here using the special swiki function called "inline".
  2. changes is one of the links that shows up in the menu at the top of every page. It is a complete listing of recent changes. It shows every page that has been changed and the time it was changed. Use this site to keep up on the current state of the swiki without having to look through the whole thing.
