ROBERT IRWIN

Robert Iwrin is an inspiring American Artist, who always seem to be testing the boundaries of art and what it means to society. He began his career in the 1960's as an abstract painter, but then changed to an "artist of light and space."

Often, Irwin's work immitated natural elements in which it surrounded.
He was born in 1928, in L.A., and attened the Otis art institute. Later in his life, he began teaching at many different universities and a guest lecturer. In 1958, after he had left school, he began to embark on his journey through abstract painting. By 1970 , Irwin broke his traditional pictures in frames, and began to explore what is now known as west coast art. These are a few of the the awards he's one:

Honors/Awards:
John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, 1976-1977
National Endowment for the Arts: Artists Grant, 1978
Honorary Doctorate in Art: San Francisco Art Institute, 1979
John D. and Catherine t. McArthur Fellowship, 1984-1989
Honorary Doctorate in Art; Otis Parsons Art Institute, Los Angeles, 1992

I think his work is inspiring, and shows freedom and creativity. When I first came upon the piece, I thought of the cool 3d affect it had to the eye. the picture appears to be suspended freely from the wall. The illusion of space reminded me of a pychcology project, testing the way we view things and how we perceive 3 dimentioal objects.
