rushkoff MEYER, KATELYN J

The first time I had ever heard of Douglass Rushkoff was in my American Culture class in High School. So I was very excited to hear that he was comming to Grand Valley. HIs lecture was very thought provoking. He asked a lot of really big, tough questions and during the lecture I just kind of took it all in, but afterwards I realized that he didn't really come right out and give us the answsers to those questions. That can be frustrating as a listener but it forced me to think and not be lazy. This kind of plays off of the part of his lecture where he instructed us, as college students to think. Although we are consumers, we do not necessarily have an income or a career yet. So this is our time to sit back and take note of everything that is going on around us and use that to form opinions and ideas. His ideas informed the creative process and the studio because his lecture sort of gave us an idea of what was out there and what to be looking for so now it is up to us to change that/do something about it. As I mentioned before he didn't just come out and say how we should determine what should get made and used in our culture he left it open for us to determine that. A lot of what he talked about had to do with how ideas and meanings are conveyed. It's something that I knew was there but I never really sat back and thought about what it was doing to our culture or how it was influencing me. In conclusion, Rushkoffs lecture was very very interesting and in a way, life-changing. I have a new perspective on our culture and not to say that I'm just taking all of Rushkoffs ideas and not thinking for myself, but rushkoff really helped me want to think for myself for a change.
