Charles and Ray Eames
I picked this couple because they weren't too outrageously opposed to my political views, and because their work is continued by Herman Miller, and important company both to furniture design in general, and to Grand Rapids particularly.
EamesOffice.com offers a good, concise introduction to the husband and wife team, and they focused on furniture and architecture design. In furniture, their goal is described as "to bring such well made furniture, with such elegant designs, at low costs, to everyone." Thus, furniture components were designed to be interchangeable, not so the customer could mix and match furniture at home, but to streamline production and reduce costs for the consumer.
I'm guessing they are responsible for a ton of the industrialized chairs we have sat in since the stacking chairs of elementary school. So we have them both to thank, and to smack, for what did they have against padding?
