CPSblog: 2 March 2006

Here are studio things for spring break:
Archives: These are 10 good digital images that you collect that exemplify or demonstrate the ideas we are focussed on below. Have these ready to format into web archives at the beginning of studio on Tuesday, March 14th
  • Slippery Objects. Think about the sorting exercise and the whole notion of objects whose form is open to varied interpretations and "readings". It is best to find objects whose identity or "name" does not blot out other imaginations. "Seeing is forgetting the name of the thing one sees"-Lawrence Weschler.
  • Installation Sites. Check out the installations project description. Shoot 10 "sites" that you think would be good for this project. Limit your sites to the near vicinity of Calder Art Center.
Metaphoric Structures:
  • Container
  • Whole-Part
  • Linkage
  • Center-Periphery
  • Source-Path-Goal
Also have a set of 20 multilples of some object that you can use for studio work on the installations project.
Please also review the images in the collection slides and installation slides, installation notes slides lectures online.
You should be gathering objects and images for use in your final projects CPS project materials. Read the collections assignment to get ideas for containers and objects.

See CPS project materials for some insight into these and read the project descriptions linked above or in the CPS projects list.
We'll also begin doing our artist/designer process presentations right after spring break. Begin preliminary research and we'll pick our subjects before we go spring break.

The CPS web site will be run on a wiki. For more information about wikis check out the link at wikipedia. Wikis are collaborative software that operate in an open source manner. Using a wiki allows this space to be treated as a common area in which all participants can contribute to the groups focus; in our case learning about meaning in the professional practice of the visual. Over the time of the studio we'll build a knowledge base and record of our dialogue and inquiry. In this way it will be mediated or captured in a substance.
Remember to check this coweb swiki every couple of days. Check these three things:
  1. calendar to see what things are on the schedule for upcoming days. The format is a bit weird with the future at the top. You have to scroll down to get to the present. The calendar has arrows that switch it to different months.
  2. CPS blog the thing you are reading is the CPS blog. Here I'll post important information or comments on things. You can start your own blog on your id page. See the "help" page to see how it is done. (the cps blog originates on another page, but is shown here using the special swiki function called "inline".
  3. changes is one of the links that shows up in the menu on the left side of every page. It is a complete listing of recent changes. It shows every page that has been changed and the time it was changed. Use this site to keep up on the current state of the swiki without having to look through the whole thing.

Were I called on to define, very briefly, the term Art, I should call it ''the reproduction of what the Senses perceive in Nature through the veil of the soul.'' The mere imitation, however accurate, of what is in Nature, entitles no man to the sacred name of ''Artist.''-Edgar Allan Poe
