Here is how to login to the servers "do" and "merz". To login to "merz" use "merz" in the address instead of "do" and use the userid and password that you entered into the form.
do.art.gvsu.edu
The do.art server is set up just for the art department (students, faculty, staff). You can connect to the server from any computer on the GVSU network. You can also use ftp to connect from any computer on the internet to transfer files to or from the server.
If you are an art major, faculty or staff memeber an account has been set up for you with the userid from the email account in the university directory.
Connecting from a Mac on the GVSU network
(network connections can also be made from PC)
• 1. From the Finder window, select the "Go" menu, then down to "Connect to Server". (You can also just type "apple-K")
• 2. Type "do.art.gvsu.edu" in the "Server Address" box and hit the "Connect" button.
• 3. Type your user id in the "Name" box.
• 4. On your first visit, click the "Options" button, then in the next window hit the "Change Password" button. Your initial password is empty so leave the "Old Password" box empty and type a "New Password" of your choice in the boxes. Leaving this password empty allows anyone to see and change anything in your area.
• 5. If you get in, you will have a choice of folders you can connect to. The one with "your userid" on it is your Home folder. "Users" contains everyone's home folder. (Other folders might be added to this list in the future). Choose any or all folders to connect to.
• 6. Be sure to disconnect from any connections when you complete your work.
Your Home folder is automatically set up with 3 folders: Documents, Library, and Public. Each has different access permissions for people other than you.
•"Documents" can not be accessed by anyone except you.
•"Library" is for system use.
•"Public" is able to be seen and read (opened) by anyone, but they can not save changes or add files to the public folder. There is a "drop box" folder inside your "Public" folder that others can save (drop) files for you, but they can not see what is in there.
- Warning: Your Home folder area (stuff not in Documents, Library, or Public) is also able to be read and opened by others. Keep any and all private material inside your "Documents" folder.

Use do.art at your own risk. It is being administered by a volunteer effort with a minimum of professional IT protocols. There are no back-ups of the data. The do.art server may be reconfigured after the semester, so make copies of any files you wish to keep before you leave for the summer, which is when we'll likely clean it off.
