Margaret Kilgallen

1968-2001
Margaret Kilgallen was an extraordinary artist who unfortunately died of breast cancer at the young age of 33. She did not leave the world empty handed upon her departure however. She produced many pieces working both indoors and out in San Fransisco where she lived later in her life with her husband Barry McGee. She was influenced by American Folk art and printed material due to a job she had as a librarian and bookbinder. She also loved anything hand made. She prefered hand-painted signs over big bright neons. She appreciated craft and doing things by hand. Her work is oftentimes flat in appearance because of her experience and study of printmaking and typography.
She oftentime depicted women in her work, she told art:21 (a PBS show) in an interview, because she is a woman. She also stated that "I believe there need to be women visual in our every day landscape, working hard and doing their own thing, whether you like it or not, whether it's acceptable or not. Working hard doing their own thing. " Her view of graffiti is also very intriguing. She sees it as art, as beautiful. She thinks that if the public can stand to see the millions of billboards and ads posted everywhere then they should be able to also appreciate graffiti and not view it in such a negative manner.
As for what made her most passionate about her work was the idea that she might be able to influence someone else's life. Whenever she felt like giving up that was the one thought that kept her going. She was truly a gifted woman with a passion for art and people and trying to make a difference.
