studioblog: 26 February 2007 | |
| For those of you in the Thursday sections, you are welcome to turn in your projects to the print shop on Thursday. You just are required to have them turned in prior to the beginning of your studio. I realized this after class today. The shop is open from 10 - 1:30 on Thursday. So you can turn it in prior to your class and still meet the deadline.

| I've been reading some lectures by Vilayanur S. Ramachandran, the neuroscientist from the mirror neurons video who talked about the polar bears. He gave a series of inter-related lectures in 2003(2003 BBC Rieth Lectures The Emerging Mind) that are quite interesting. The one linked here on synesthesia really relates to our work on the image and word project. Among other things he claims that he thinks artists tend to have more capacity for associative thinking between sensory modalities (touch, vision, hearing) and that this may be the root of language. This is powerful science that points to the importance of what we are about.

For Studio FEB 7 and 8We continue the image and word project with a critique on WEd 7THurs8. Have at least 3 of each modality printed out for crit. 3 word/word, 3 image/image, 3 word/image. Touch base with Paul if you're having any trouble.(Mon/Wed section - we missed studio on Monday due to snow - lets push ahead and try to have the prints done for crit- I expect there to be questions and issues, but we'll push through). Please continue to look at the image and word project description and related pages as you progress in this studio. I strongly encourage you to use your own digital images and not get stuck only using found images.

| For the next studio meetings (feb.1-2) make and store at least 10 image files that just have white text on black background. We'll use these in a group studio experiment. Continue to refine your set of images. If you get into some ideas go make or find more images that have the ideas in them. Don't just stick with what you found. That is submitting to being a passive consumer. Act on your culture. Work with the methods of image/text combination in photoshop. Do this a lot.

Chicago PrepsIn preparation for the Chicago trip do some web research:1. Art Institute of Chicago: http://www.artic.edu 2. MCA Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago: http://mcachicago.org 3. Also research Richard Tuttle. He is the featured artist at the MCA. His work is very raw and abstract. I often say that if a GV student really learned 2d design and color in Foundations then they visually 'get' Tuttle. It is like a test. So often when work addressed formal things it also is highly pure. Tuttle's work is highly formal, but often includes materials and forms that are culturally dismissed as trash, debris, and of no value. I don't think he's celebrating these mundane things as 'valuable', but requiring us to see that the value is rooted in the experience of the material world. This relates closely to what we're after when we study visual perception in cps. In this way he works within the tradition of painting. 4. Check out the list of Artists/Designers who you might do presentations on. Look for works by them in Chicago. artist/designer process presentations

Do Page on a PCI'm not sure how to post on the studio blog, but Paul wanted me to write about accessing the "do system" on a pc. First you go to My Computer, then click on "My Network Places". Go to "add a Network Place" (left side of the page underneath "Network Tasks"). Click "Choose another network location", then click next. Type in "\\do.art.gvsu.edu\yourusername" and hit next. There will be a login box and just type your username and password. I haven't figured out how to access the "user" guide yet but atleast those without macs can get onto their own account. -Katie Bedard

Library Studio Followup - more variations on working with the archives.1. I misplaced a SD memory card in the Thursday afternoon studio. It was a RIdata brand 1gig card. If anyone ended up with it please let me know.2. I created an Album with all of the images in it. It takes a while to load because they are all in one window. Check it out in the Culled Sets Album. One caveat. The images in this album are actually linked images. If you comment on them the comments won't show up on the original image record, but will only show up on the linked version. Both versions show up in the 'latest comments' listings. 3. As I was looking through the images I kept making connections between images, like I was playing concentration (the card game). So I set up a new functions that makes it possible to create albums of such groupings. The Archive program on the server makes it possible to "link" images to albums. The "Link" functions does not move the image. It dupicates it in another album. I created an album for these new linked or Culled Albums. Feel free to spend some of your time creating these Culled Albums in addition to adding comments. - paul

Great job with the Library Archive.I was looking through and this is an amazing archive; so rich and varied. I'm looking forward to seeing what we find as we look deeper. The comments you make in response to the images will help us share our thoughts as we look. I recommend that you have a look at the list of latest comments. This list is shown after clicking the little OopsThe latest comments link was not visible to anyone but me until I fixed it just a minute ago (Thurs 10:30pm). Sorry if this was confusing to anyone. Now you can browse through all of the comments made to date. They show in reverse order - most recent first. You can also see the comments compiled under the image on the image page. (check out the earlier blog post 11 Jan. for more info about what to do in the comments). You also might want to add more information on the images in your archive. You can use the description field for this. The summary field too will show under the title on the album page. Changing the title to something informative is helpful to viewers as well.

Next step the Library Archive Studio: Assignment for Next WeekFinish uploading and annotating (entering text in the fields) your images as soon as possible. In addition before next studio (mon. tues.) look through the whole archive and study the images. Spend your studio time posting some notes using the 'comments' feature. (to post comments open the sidebar and click 'add comment' . . . ).pay attention to our primary objective in the studio: what are the ideas/meanings that are generated by the image? It is often productive to address detailed specifics in this process. Identify the specific parts, elements, or qualities of the image and the corresponding ideas/thoughts/meanings generated. Don't worry about logical conclusions, just look for energizes and curious connections between the image and your thinking. You could even notate these connections in the following manner: "element in photo" > "ideas generated" I posted a couple of examples here and here.

| Great start-off to the studios. I'm looking forward to working with everyone. Be sure to review the syllabus in detail and bring in your curious objects for the studio collections this semester. I posted some instructions for the Library Image Sampling Studio. Check them out. I posted this page to the CPS projects page. One thing you can do ahead of time is register on the archive site that I set up. This site is much like flickr, but is just for our studio. Follow the registration link and sign up for an account. -paul

| The CPS web site will be run on a wiki. For more information about wikis check out the link at wikipedia. Wikis are collaborative software that operate in an open source manner. Using a wiki allows this space to be treated as a common area in which all participants can contribute to the groups focus; in our case learning about meaning in the professional practice of the visual. Over the time of the studio we'll build a knowledge base and record of our dialogue and inquiry. In this way it will be mediated or captured in a substance. Remember to check this coweb swiki every couple of days. Check these three things:
I keep forgetting to give you this warning. Our wiki is wide open. Anyone can edit or hack in. No big deal because we can always use the history function to back it up to the correct spot. BUt, some hackers and pranksters put PORN on such sites. So be warned - if you get on the wiki and there is PORN or other inappropriate media - please let me know asap. You can also help by taking it down. The only way to prevent this is to put a password on the wiki, which might not be a bad idea. It just changes the whole dynamic.
