Although the Gorilla Girls lecture was interesting but I find myself disagreeing and somewhat offended by the views she talked about.

To start out with a positive point, I agree with their view that women should have equal rights in the work place and in art galleries. I think that these are very important for the world today. As a female I personally am disgusted that in businesses women are still being paid a lower salary for completing the same tasks as men. For society to say that this act is okay is horribly wrong. Also, for art museums to represent male artist more than female artists is wrong. It shouldn’t be the sex of the artist that determines their success in the art world. It should be the quality and impression the artwork leaves on the viewer that determines whose artwork is displayed in the galleries. As a viewer of artwork I don’t think the sex of the artist changes my view of the artwork, this maybe because I don’t think that it is important. When I look at art I look at the artwork first and let that form my judgment of the art. I do not look first wither the artist is male or female. It is art and that is important. The speaker never mentioned whether the artwork by the male artists were worthy of being in the galleries. The artists don’t have anything to do with whose work is shown. We have no idea if the artist’s works being displayed in the galleries are quality work. It would be one thing if the artists' work being shown were absolute crap. Both men and women should be equally represented in galleries but women’s work should not be shown just for the fact that they are a women. However, righteous their cause for equality for women I was offended by their posting a poster on a post office box. Although, it is a small act it is against the law and it shows a disregard for the government.

I think the part of the lecture where she spoke of the dolls to be personally offensive. If the world is to overcome stereotypes then we need to stop paying attention to them. By putting the stereotypes out there it continues the existence of them, if that makes sense. By putting the stereotypes out there and laughing at them it just insures that they will last. It makes them appropriate for them to exist. Personally as a member of the catholic faith I felt her comments especially offensive. Making fun of anyone’s faith is horribly wrong, what makes one religion better than the next.

I also found the political views in this lecture annoying. Personally, I am so tired of hearing democratic views of the war. It is getting old. By not supporting our president in his decisions we make the United States look bad. If we do not support our leader than how are we supposed to make our world a better place? We have soldiers in a different country. How are they supposed to be asked to fight for us if the American people do not back them? By not fighting we would be saying that terrorism is appropriate and killing thousands of people on September is worth acknowledging. However, the view of the internal improvements, such as health care and education, are valid points.
