Im gonna take a risk here and begin by saying i am not a feminist. Even after the presentation i would not call myself a feminist. I agree with a few of the points the speaker made however, i personally believe the feminist "movement" or whatever u want to call it separates itself as a group more than anything. Also, im a little annoyed by the fact that i can't attend an art event without hearing about liberal politics. I understand that the art profession is a generally liberal environment yet there are artists that have their own political views that should be respected. Feelings aside, this presentation did have its relations to CSP.

The Guerrilla Girls goal is to make people think. They claim to be "the consience of the art world" and want to provoke critique on the art world. In CPS we also want people to look at work and critique it, think about it. So far in the class we have mostly dealt with design and how images are used to stimulate feelings and meaning. The Guerrilla Girls also use powerful images such as the guerrila head on the female nude to get their message across. The Girls are unique i think in that they incorporate text with their images and the text is equally as important as the image. I think this is a hard skill to master. How do u come up with text that is thought provoking and pair it with an image that does the same without sacrificing the functions of each separately? It would appear that for The Guerrilla Girls its easy. The billboard for the acadamy awards is a great example of how they send their message to the viewers. The image of the altered Oscar figure is suttle yet surprising. The text giving statistics on the winners of the award is powerful in that they get right to the point. The Guerrilla Girls give the simple, direct and to the point facts that make the viewer ask themsleves, really? The Guerrilla Girls are a great example on how image and text can be effectively paired to send a powerful message.

Another techinique they use to engage their audience is comedy. In CSP i think we have touched on this technique but not really explored it to the fullest. In my opinion the Guerrilla Girls use comedy in an effective way in that it doesnt compromise their message. They use propaganda style to reach a large audience and to do this they need to draw attention. By going over the top in exaggeration and sarcasim the Guerrilla Girls can achieve that. So i think i experienced another technique on how to engage an art audience and i found it interesting as will as funny!
