To start off, I would like to say that this presentation was not what I expected. I thought that I would be going to a presentation that talked about womans place in the art realm, however after about 15 minutes into the presentation I realized that this lady in the gorilla costume was trying to get her political beliefs out to everyone. Besudes doing this, The gorilla girls presentation was very dynamic and interesting to watch because of the witty commentary that was intertwined into the piece. On the projector screen when she was talking about when the gorilla girls went through NYC and posted posters, the visual would not have been the same in your head as actually seeing the words in bold black letters on the screen. One poster that I thought was particularly comical was the one that said, "Does a woman have to be naked to make it into the museum?" I thought that some of the commentary was funny, and others a bit out of line. In a presentation where I thought that art was going to be the main topic, politics got into the mix, and made me put up my guard somewhat, which made it less enjoyable.

When the Gorilla Girls started talking about how woman have been underrepresented in the art world, and then went on to say that they had very little rights in the early days, like in the renaissance, it was almost like an oxy moron. Of course there aren't going to be pieces of art produced by woman when they can't do it. It was however, an important piece of information to bring to mind. I think that the witty comments put on tshirts, billboards, and bumper stickers are the most visual aspects of the Gorilla Girls argument.

I also thought that the entire night was prodominantly aimed at puting down the white male. Why is it not okay to poke a little fun at woman, but okay to put things on the screen like "the automically correct oscar" which shows an overweight white male on the screen? I think that this is really the essence of what he goal was during her presentation. Overall, I'm glad that I went to go see this performance. I better understood why it is that woman were not represented in the early days of the art world, and it surely opens my eyes to issues in the art world today.
