Discrimination is still ever present here in the 21st century and the Guerilla Girls make that known. I never really considered the idea of women being discriminated against in the art world. I thought it would be distracting not being able to see the women's face. After the lecture I thought back to the class and the videos we've watched. It is apparent that male artists and their work are much more prominent. I feel the Guerilla Girls have gained attention in their effective presentations. Their identities are indeed kept hidden and I myself was more attuned to what they said. Being male its easy to just ignore these women and fall into labeling with many of the stereotypes. While these women are serious in their cause they are still able to laugh at themselves and use humor in their work and presentations.

The hardest thing the Guerilla Girls have to battle is the past. In todays world, there are so many competing voices out there whether it's groups and organizations, advertising messages, or politicians. Sometimes you have to be extreme to be heard and recognized. Related to my own field of advertising, you have to find a way to sort through the clutter and get your message heard.
IN this sense, the Guerilla Girls have found a way to do so. The girls combine visual and aural messages to get their voices heard. There is strong emotion in thier work and behind their message. They explained how they began as a bunch of pissed off women. These strong feelings have in turn helped the women discover a way to be heard and produce their own unique work.

Related to the studio, I think that we need to find something we are passionate about and incorporate it into our own work. Every artist can be identified by their work, there are common themes among their work. I think that is the goal of our studio work, not specifically following a set of guidelines, but rather developing ourselves in our work.

While I may not entirely agree with everything the Guerilla Girls discussed, they were effective in getting me to think about women and art. However, I feel that the girls need to begin to work to encourage women artists and not just present the facts.
