Frieda Kahlo asked the crowd which one of us were feminist. Well, I definatly call myself a feminist. I'm all for women's rights and for the rights of anyone who doesn't get a fair chance. Frieda was also right about so many thinking that feminist was a "bad word". In the olden days, when the first people wanted fair rights for women, others would be like "gasp! There's a feminist!" Its like it was almost a swear word then. I think the Gorilla Girlz are doing an amazing thing - taking real issues and combining them with a sense of humor and facts that are too real to deny. I truely believe that laughter - good laughter - is disarming to many people. I think the best part of the lecture were the facts - the quotes, the letters, and the statistics. There is nothing more convincing than the facts. The favorite of mine is the one where the women's artwork was in the basement, under the mens work which was on the main floor. Telling the museum to "put the women on top" was just perfect.

At first, I didn't understand the use for the gorilla maks, but now I do. Removing the face of a person, I think, makes the issues gain more light - because the people aren't looking at the physical, but the abstract. Perhaps that is why abstract art has always intriqued me. Its like I'm not really looking at a physical peice of art, but its in my mind, floating around and making things happen..
