Library Image Sampling Studio
This studio project is designed to generate an archive of images. In this project "image" is any graphical representation (photographic, diagrammatic, cartographic, graphic, drawing . . . . . ). The intent is to find interesting images that you would not otherwise seek out by programming the search process and to create a record of a range of images in the library. The implication is that this is a range of images found in recorded knowledge. It is imperative in the process that you remain objective and follow procedures. You may only in the last instance if confronted with choices, deviate from the procedure and choose the more interesting images. In these instances choose the image that is the most curious rather than one that confirms your expectations or affirms the expectations of what you would find in the Category you are in.
Your sampling should consist of one image from each section of the library as demarcated by the first letter in the Library of Congress Call number. Collect an image from each of the 23 letters of the alphabet. Devise a consistent method of choosing the image given the layout and organization of the volumes in the library. This method must be specific and it must be applied consistently. Once you've made your initial directed selection you may vary in your final choice if it generates more interest and curiosity.
Take a good digital image of the image. Make sure the lighting is even and the image is clearly visible. Also make sure that the image size is good (min. 4 megapixels).
Also collect the following data from the book.
Library of Congress Call Number:
Shelf Subject Title:
Book Title:
Author:
page number of the image:
We will make digital archives of these images and proceed with our analysis.
Navigate to the Full Archive Website at:
http://look.gvsu.edu/cps/gall/
(To build your digital archive you will need to be registered on the Archive. You can register any time before class).
Then go into the "Library Images" Album
Once "inside" this album Create a new Album (it is helpful to include the word "album" in the name of the album so it is easily distinguished from the images),
The controls are all located in the "sidebar". You can access this with the link in the upper right corner or by clicking the little

icon closest to the left edge of the window.
Click "Add Photo" and upload your images. It is best to use the java applet for many files or the "From Web Browser" function.
- After your album is created navigate to the "Edit Album section and fill out the "custom fields". These will identify your group members.
- After your images are uploaded navigate to the "Edit Image" section and fill out the "custom fields". This is where you put the LOC number and other information about each book.
