The information below addresses the proposal by section; please include page numbers with the resubmitted proposal to facilitate our review.
Introduction and Background
Please include information which addresses the following questions
1. What is the structure of the current major?
2. How many other emphases are within the current major?
3. How does this emphasis fit within the current major?
4. How many students are currently within the major?
5. How will this emphasis affect enrollments within the other emphasis in the major?
6. How does the new major overlap with other courses and content offered by Art and Design?
- Third Paragraph: Please include examples of the type of equipment identified as highly expensive vs. inexpensive
- Please refer to all units by their designated name throughout the proposal for example, the “School of Communications”.
- The proposal mentions that the proposed emphasis will interface with other disciplines but these avenues are not specified within the narrative. In what ways does the visual emphasis interface with other disciplines? This should also be addressed in items 1 and 4 under justification and need.
Justification and Need
- The first paragraph mentions a ‘comprehensive assessment’ that supports the creation of this emphasis. The proposal would be strengthened by including documentation that supports this information.
- Since some of the courses have been offered as special topics, the proposal would be strengthened by including enrollment data from these courses.
- If this content for this emphasis will be “pulled out” from other courses, how will this affect the content delivered in the other courses? Will these courses need to be restructured?
- It may be worthwhile to consider other models for interdisciplinary majors within the university eg. The International Relations major
- The proposal does not read clearly to a non-specialist audience. Please include further elaboration concerning the scope of the program. Eg., What type of theory will be covered? How are the theories different? These answers will help to clearly define any overlap issues with other disciplines.
Explanation of Comparable Areas
- How does the proposed curricular program compare to the curricular programs offered at the universities mentioned. What are the course requirements? How are these universities similar to or different from GVSU?
Program Goals
- First Paragraph, line 4: How is visual culture defined in this context? Is there overlap with COM 320?
- Interdisciplinary Exchange: The proposal mentions that the proposed emphasis will interface with other disciplines but these avenues are not specified within the narrative. In what ways does the visual emphasis interface with other disciplines?
- The proposal authors should be aware of the fact that the Film and Video major requires a secondary admission and be prepared to make accommodations for any students who choose the option mentioned.
- Affiliation with Non-Profit Administration: Please elaborate on the connection with the collaborators mentioned. The proposal narrative should also included supporting documentation (specific to these collaborations) from the individuals or units mention.
Community Affiliations
- Please identify the organizations within the community with which the program is affiliated. This information would greatly strengthen the proposal.
Summary of Requirements.
1. What is the structure of the current major?
2. How many other emphases are within the current major?
3. How does this emphasis fit within the current major?
4. A sample curriculum and an elaboration of the advising process should be included.
Pattern of Coursework
- A sample curriculum should be included with the proposal.
- A proposed catalog copy for the emphasis is required as a part of the proposal.
Impact on faculty and facilities
- A fuller explanation of the technology requirements is necessary e.g. Is there any specific software required for this program?
- Time table: Please include projected dates for all items listed in the timetable.
- Please include responses from all units which overlap with this program and related courses.
Budget
- Please include the budget page from the faculty handbook with accompanying justification.
- Please include a clearer statement concerning the nature of the collaboration with the Philanthropy center.
- The CCC recommends working with Kathy Gulembo in revising the budget needs.
Curriculum Resource Statement
- Please include a clearer statement concerning the nature of the collaboration with the Philanthropy center. Since much of the funding for this program relies on funding from the Philanthropy center, the proposal should include letters of support and commitment from the Philanthropy center. The proposal should also include a plan for funding the program if the funds from the Philanthropy center are not available.
- If the addition of this emphasis will result in the use of classroom space that is under the auspices of units other than Art and Design, the CCC recommends including support letters from these units.
- The CCC understands the reasons that students are encouraged or directed to have their own laptops. This should be explicitly justified in the narrative.
