For Weds. Sept. 30th/Thurs. Oct. 1st

  • We'll be going to ArtPrize for class each of these days. Given our 3 hour timeframe for class I've planned activities for the middle hour that are required. Before and after that you are encouraged to view more of ArtPrize either inside or out. You can also register and vote.
http://artprize.org
  • Wednesday's group will be attending the Mary Jane Jacob lecture at Kendall College of Art at noon. YOu can get to details on the ArtPrize calendar here: http://artprize.org/calendar. Before you can browse the outdoor works and maybe some inside venues. There is also a panel discussion at the Gerald R. Ford Museum about the National Crisis in Funding for the Arts with the president of the Kennedy Center in NY. I'll probably go to this.
After the lecture more of the venues will be open. I'd recommend UICA, the Old Federal Building, and the Beerhorst Wonder Wagon along with Civic Studio on the Gillett Bridge.
  • Thursday's group will be getting special access to the Old Federal Building at 9am. Please be there promptly as the staff will let us in all at once. Late comers may get access, but it will be more complicated. Before and after check out other venues indoor and out. There is another KEndall LUnchbox series with ArtPRize founders Rick Devos and JEff Meewuwsen (director of UICA), and another program at ActiveSite with installation artist Michelle Bosak.

On The River

Civic Studio’s Current Project

Showing during and after ArtPrize from:
September 1 - December 19, 2009

Location: Interurban (Gillette) Bridge over the Grand River, Downtown Grand Rapids

On The River is a project by Civic Studio. The studio uses visual art to investigate public life in specific contexts. Our current project takes place in a portable studio on the Interurban Bridge in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan from September 1st to December 19th, 2009.

Open Studio Assignments On Display During ArtPrize:
We are beginning our project by doing basic research on different aspects of the river and site. Open Studio Assignments structure and map activities and findings along the Grand River. These assignments explore various ways that rivers are incorporated into aspects of public life. Rivers are forms that are natural, cultural, experiential, social, recreational and industrial. Our use of rivers reflect social imagination and necessity.

The public can follow along or do their own Open Studio Assignments. Ongoing results are shared online in a publicly editable wiki at: http://civicstudio.org/river. During ArtPrize a sampling of results will be shown in this evolving display.

Songs About The Grand River:
The studio is inviting area songwriters to write songs involving the River. More information can be found at: http://civicstudio.org/river/index.php/Songs_About_the_Grand_River

Text And Image Projections:
Each night during Artprize, the studio will present text projections on the large screen over the river at dusk. The projections are visible to the north and south for several blocks. The public can view them from a distance or stop by and talk with studio members.

Video Projections:
Each Friday and Saturday of ArtPrize, Civic Studio will present video projects on the large screen. Videos deal with fish, early public transportation on the river and cycles of experiments in simple water cycles. Video projections will start at approximately 8:30.

All projects are subject to good weather.

Portable Cinema:
Civic Studio will partner with Portable Cinema to show a context-appropriate film at the River. TBA.
Studio Schedule:
Please check the studio schedule for these and other exciting events. We will be adjusting and adding to things as our project progresses during and after ArtPrize.

Civic Studio operates with the idea that public life is plastic; it is changeable and embedded in material. The studio’s work is based on a commitment to expand the relevance and utility of art in everyday life in both practical and imaginative ways. The project is situated, public, and emergent. Members of the studio focus on the development and application of art processes that are about a particular place. The process itself is public. Our research, methods, and development are evident and visible. Studio work emerges from our extended engagement in a particular context.
Civic Studio is a project of the Department of Art and Design at Grand Valley State University. Since 1999, Civic Studio has worked to reset the relationship between art and the public through the development of methodologies and contexts for the creation and presentation of art in public. The studio has done 6 major projects.

Agenda Day 2:

  • American Visions #8
  • Intros and Hot topics

Between now and the next time we meet

  • Studio Writing: American Visions
  • Prepare for the chicago Trip, Thursday, Sept. 10th
  • We don't meet on Monday, Sep 7 or Tues. Sept. 8
  • Research the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago to familiarize yourself with them. Also learn something about Cy Twombly and Olafur Elliasson. Here are some notes/links on Elliasson:
Olafur Eliasson's web page has a pretty large number of publications available as pdf downloads. There's a pretty good interview between him and Robert Irwin, and an article called "Your Engagement Has Consequences" that look interesting. The whole list of downloadable articles is here:
http://www.olafureliasson.net/publications-texts.html
Also, the MOMA's page on him is really excellent, with great images, video interviews, etc.

The CPS web site will be run on a wiki. For more information about wikis check out the link at wikipedia. Wikis are collaborative software that operate in an open source manner. Using a wiki allows this space to be treated as a common area in which all participants can contribute to the groups focus; in our case learning about meaning in the professional practice of the visual. Over the time of the studio we'll build a knowledge base and record of our dialogue and inquiry. In this way it will be mediated or captured in a substance.
Remember to check this coweb swiki every couple of days. Check these three things:
  1. studioblog the thing you are reading is the CPS blog. Here I'll post important information or comments on things. You can start your own blog on your Id pages. See the "help" page to see how it is done. (the studioblog originates on another page, but is shown here using the special swiki function called "inline".
  2. changes is one of the links that shows up in the menu at the top of every page. It is a complete listing of recent changes. It shows every page that has been changed and the time it was changed. Use this site to keep up on the current state of the swiki without having to look through the whole thing.

WARNING
Wikis can get hacked and used as pass-through sites for spam. No big deal because we can always use the history function to back it up to the correct spot. BUt, some hackers and pranksters put PORN on such sites. So be warned - if you get on the wiki and there is PORN or other inappropriate media - please let me know asap. You can also help by taking it down.
