Final Images

I want to be sure to get a final set of images that are full quality. The images that we've put up on the wiki or on Merz have mostly been reduced in size. I want to keep an archive set at full quality. So, please drop a set of your images on the Merz server in my "admin" folder.

  • Don't forget to post your Fin Inte Stments by Thursday, April 27th at 5pm. After 5pm read everyone's statements in preparation for our final dicussion on Friday.

   I've set our final meeting time to be Friday, April 28th from 12-2pm. Everyone should hang a summative selection of work from the semester. We'll also have a rambling discussion that is informed by everyone's Final Integrative Statements which are due Thursday th 27th.

I've added some pages to the wiki to facilitate the completion of the studio.
April Critiques is ready to recieve post-critique writing from artists being critiqued and specified repsonders.
Fin Inte Stments is set up to describe and recieve your integrative statements at the conclusion of the course. It is a good idea to review this asap and be thinking about your statement.

Studio status reports were started on Feb 26th with a blog post and announcement in class. We replaced the weekly studio writings with these reports as a way of keep in touch across the long divide of a week between our meetings. I created a wiki page for these at studio status reports. This page works as an index to be able to get to everyones reports. I know some of you have posted your status reports elsewhere. Please at least use your "studio status report page" as an index that links to your reports if they are in other places. You could also move or duplicate your reports on the your status page.

"we don't got no traction"


I'll talk more about this on Friday, but I'm concerned that "we got no traction". This means that the studio as a whole is not making progress in the ways that it should. We'll discuss what we can do as a group about it, but each individual should be reminded of the following:
  • You are expected to work 6 hours outside of class on image studio stuff. You are accountable to evidence this by what you have to show in class. If there have been weeks in which you've blown this off, then you have even more to do.
  • In general I recommend working on more than one body of studio work.
  • You are expected to have 6 hours of work with you to do in studio on Fridays and to make the use of this time in studio. (remember we are making images to be experienced, not only looked at on the computer. "get material, material")
  • Everyone is expected to post a studio status report every Wednesday by midnight.
  • Group contribution is a major part of the grading criteria. If you are not producing in the studio, it not only affects your performance, but it brings down the group.
  • Each of you will be required to write an integrative statement at the end of the course. In this you'll want to cite your studio work as an indication of new understandings you've gained around the course.

Let's dig in and get traction this week - and capitalize on the good work we've done thus far by evidencing it in some powerful images. -paul

   Three important things!!!!!
  • 1. Be sure to do your Critique writings Mar 3 Critwritings. Your report on your own crit is due by Monday, Midnight, and your response to your designated fellow studio members report is due Wednesday, Midnight. I realize it is Spring Break, but we need this continuity of discourse and there are no other explicit assignments for the Break.
  • 2. Sign-up for the last round of Critiques on the plan page was to be done by everyone before leaving the studio yesterday. Please sign up. Limit 5 per crit day so the last to sign up have the least choice, even though "choice is not control".
  • 3. Have a great Spring Break.

I had a further thought this morning after our discussion Friday about a projected skylight. I wonder what it would be like to "exchange" skylights with people from another place. This could be done with ichat av. Other views could be exchanged as well - even the view of someone else walking, that you could watch while walking here. . . . -paul

   I added a couple more imagists to the list. One, arturo herrera, was one of two artists I thought of when Ian talked of using vector images to blow things up real big. The other was already on the list, Matthew Ritchie. Anyone interested in vector, weird narrative, myth, fantasy, database, and image and space (i think that is everyone) should check Ritchie out in detail. Both of these guys were part of Art 21 season 3, but you should look further than this video.
The other new addition is Rebecca Morris, originally from Chicago. -paul

   Today we had a small studio meeting about commodities and the studio. Sorry that Kevin wasn't here to join in what is really a dialogue he has generated.
I offered some source material in a friend Conrad Bakker's work and a class he is teaching in the graduate program at U of Illinois ChampaignURbanna called art economies I wrote to request access to their wiki and Conrad replied, "We have not covered exchange in full yet, but there are some links. and if they want to use the discussion features, that would be cool too. There is a good essay on exchange by miwon kwon in the work ethic book. Also found a nice anthro essay on barter but can't remember who wrote it. Its on the arteconomies syllabus." - Conrad
I recommend looking at the external links on their wiki. Check out the artists and projects. If you have more specific questions regarding exchange, barter, commerce, commodity, we can chat or email with Conrad. -paul

I also mentioned JSG Boggs in our meeting on exchange. Boggs draws money, then spends it. It collapses the issues of money, art, representation, and law into one form. His web site seems to be down, but there is a wikipedia entry and here is a site with many links on his work. - paul

   I was looking at the new artist that Paul put up on the imagists page.... Another artist along these lines is an artist that I enjoy and whose work I seek out when ever I go to Chicago is Lisa Nankivil. Check her work out!! Great things....

   I added William Betts to the imagists page. I saw his work yesterday at Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago - where I'm never dissapointed visually or conceptually. If you go to his web site read about how he makes the paintings.
Also, at Rhona Hoffman gallery there was a large image installation from Italian artist Stephano Arienti. I have larger digital images, but you can see some images here on the Rhona Hoffman website. As you can see in these images the piece combined large (found) images combined with various samples of material. So perceptually it shifted from material to pictorial and actual to virtual (two rudiments in one). A former Civic studio participant from Calvin, Michelle Vondiziano works at this gallery, and former GV Illustration student Lorene Hospidaar works around the corner at Carrie Seacrest Gallery.

I've added another P-Web Lectures. This one is on good looking. It relates to studio moto number 6.

  • History Documentation and the Image examples of images that deal with "what happened" as source, inspiration, content. See the description under studio moto on the course wiki for a complete description.
  • Vitamin P these images are from the book Vitamin P. I'll encorporate them later into moto sets, but for now check them out. (you can see some of the "moto" categories in itallics at the end of the text at the top. There are many examples of image and site/installation.
  • SpacePlane here is a set of images that explore the relationship of planes to space and site.

   For those of you going to chicago on tuesday here is an imagestudio tip. I just recieved notice from Bodybuilder and Sportsman Gallery of their current exhibition of Diana Guerrero-Macia' exhibit. She "samples text and imagery from pop culture and then reassembles these fragmentary sources into "paintings." These are not paintings in the traditional sense but are hand-sewn fabric (typically using wool, cotton and vinyl) that is stretched like a canvas". Also look for any Ken Fandell that might be on display. He was just in a group show with other gallery artists working in diverse ways with images.
I also recommend other galleries in the West loop - especially Donald Young now showing Gary Hill (a very important artist who uses video and sound- you don't see this everyday) and Rhona Hoffman and among others. Monique Meloche Gallery has a group show up entitled "Sublime, Soft-core Monkey Butts and Scarlett Johannson on Skull Island" that invovles numerous image artists. There is one bus that will go right to the west loop after we arrive at the art institute. Otherwise, I plan to head over there at about 12:30 in a cab - if anyone wants to pile in. -paul

   In our critique I mentioned the Villa Savoy by Corbusier. So I put up a whole set of images called spaceplane that cover a range of planes and space in architecture and other things. -paul

I've put up a couple of archives of images relevant to our work.
One exemplifies the studio moto concept of History/documentary. The other is a archive fitting several categories in studio moto. This one is called Vitamin P, because they all come from the book, Vitamin P. In this set from vitamin P, the categories are indicated in italics at the end of the text at the top. You can also just go to the index of all of the image sets. I'll update this list as I create the sets. -paul

   I have been thinking about the idea of commodification for the last week. Can't get the idea out of my head. I am not sure if the idea is completely bad as what I think. In culture today we see everything become a commodity.

I think there might be some good that can come out of this whole idea. Something that I have seen since I have been here at college is that there are always groups/orgs. trying to raise money for funding. I've seen art student try to sell their work to students before (some do well, many don't).

The idea of a commodification station has been a part of an ongoing discussion I have had with my fellow paint Jason. Being realistic we know that many people who like our work (friends/other students) don't have the means to buy our work. What we have talked about it the 'museum gift shop" idea. All museums do it... they shuffle you in and through and place the gift shops next to the exits. I think it would be an interesting experiment to "tap" into this idea. It could be a cool project for us to try this semester or another image studio class. Create images and make shirts out of them... nothing fancy- iron on decal shirts or silkscreen (look at the graphics dept ), posters, post cards (just look at what Jules is doing with her Moline project), ect. use the money earned to fund a larger group project. Use what we can to fund something better!?

I think people would buy products that are affordable, and selling things in Calder by telling people you are doing a fund-raiser they would see even more I think. I would be interested in talking with others about doing some type of project like this for our own studio driven time later in the semester if anyone thinks this is a good idea.

  • In our discussion today on phenomenology I brought up Olafur Elliasson as an artist whose work (which uses digital stuff at times) is a rich - even intense experience. His web site is at http://www.olafureliasson.net/. In addition to his space works he does some photo archive works.
  • I also mentioned DJ spooky and added him to the imagists list. Also, Lawrence Lessig and his work on copyright. Often our gut common-sence reaction to copyright issues actually impede cultural progress and give power to a small corporate elite. Check out one of lessig's books on this Free Culture. Of course there is a free version online.
  • The response page is set up for Chapter 4. Kevin poses some questions at the top along with a link to Teresa's overview.

I also posted studio moto which is the document I mentioned that discusses 8 Studio Motivations: Frames, Foci, and Points of Departure.    Some updates
  • There is a way to add some notes on your html gallery pages made in Iview. This might be helpful with projects such as the planarity archives. The images might be enhanced with some contextual commentary or captioning. I put together a little how-to on the bottom of the planarity archive page.
  • I added a archive projects page and linked it to the table of contents (which I rearranged a bit).
  • I framed the cha.1 studio writing a bit. -paul

   The organization, communication, and documentation of imagestudio6 will be done on a wiki. For more information about wikis check out the link at wikipedia. Wikis are collaborative software that operate in an open source manner. Using a wiki allows this space to be treated as a common area in which all participants can contribute to the group's focus; in our case learning about images and meaning in visual culture. Over the time of the studio we'll build a knowledge base and record of our dialogue and inquiry. In this way it will be mediated or captured in a substance. paul
