CPS project materials

Here are some supplies and materials you can be looking for for upcoming projects. It is great to bring actual things with you for use experientially in the studio. We can store things on the shelves and drawers. Keep in mind that some things might not work for projects, but are good to consider in the studio environment. Often they will lead to other - better ideas.

images for use with the word / image project These can be from digital camera, internet, magazine, photography . . . . . usually narrative images work the best. We'll be most likely be doing these in grayscale.

words for use with the word/ image project. This will make more sence as we get into the project, but for starters we'll be looking for 20 or so words to begin with.

snack, fast food, product labels and packages to use with the label project. Bring in the actual label. We'll scan or digitally photograph them.

15 to 100 multiples of the same object for the installation project. These can be any size, but are usually smaller than your head. The best objects are the ones that offer some slippage in how they are perceived; either individually or how they configure and interact with each other.

Objects, images, and containers for the collections project.

Thrift Stores

This page was started by the Cps studio in the Fall of 2005. It is devoted to seeking out thrift stores in the Grand Rapids Area. If you have found any thrift/used stores, please share!

charitable thrift stores:
Salvation Army (Division Ave., 28th St.)
Goodwill (Division Ave, 29th St.),
St. Vincent DePaul (Division)
also, the christian schools have a thrift store called "New 2 You" on 29th St.

2nd hand:
One Mans Junk (Leonard St.)
Scavenger Hunt (Division Ave.)
Nobody's Sweetheart (Fulton) (i just found out they're closing 40% off)
Flashback (Division) -> very cool "vintage clothing" and we bought a crazy manequin for an art project too...sm
(flashbacks has gone out of business)
Daddy-o's ([i'm not sure how to spell it.] (Fulton, right off Division by the UICA.) very similar to scavenger hunt.
Time Left (in Allendale, on Lake Michigan Ave, same plaza as Family Fare on the right. You can take the 36 bus out that way) GV Students get 10% off

Antique:
Phil's Stuff (Wealthy St.)
Acanthus (Wealthy St.)
there are a few on Fulton St. between Eastern & Fuller. new Eastown Antiques (Lake Dr.)

also good for cheap crap:
Kent Novelty (Michigan Ave.)
I've also heard rumors of some sort of junk shop on Leonard between Fuller & Ball behind the Dollar Tree that is only open on Tues & Thurs but ... as of now it is only a (slightly) "urban" myth (I haven't been able to locate it)

Follow this link for more shops and their addresses.
