Next (round robin style) each student opens the file of the student to thier right and alters the image in some way. When finished (this could be done on specific time intervals so everyone switches at the same time) the student saves a copy of the original file according to a specified naming scheme (Adam Smith's picture as altered by Beth Jones could be - "asmith.bjones" or a number system could be used "asmith.2. Each student ends up making an altered version of each of the other student's original image.
