Stories behind the Artists Works

In the “stories” episode of Art: 21, there were four artist featured. They were Kara Walker, Kiki Smith, Do-Ho Suh, and Trenton Doyle Hancock. All of these artists have different styles to express their interest in art. However, they have the same theme which is stories behind their works. Kara Walker uses silhouette technique to tell about her stories. Most of her works are based on her life experiences and past events. She draws with white chalk on black paper and she cuts them out and pastes it on the wall. Kiki Smith uses sculpture, textiles, and printmaking to tell her narrative subjects. She is also creates her works based on her life experiences. Do-Ho Suh has the concept of using fabric and sculpture that relate to his life experience. He uses dog tags to create the sculpture and also fabric to make the model of his parent’s house in Korea. He gets the idea of the dog tags from his experience when we he was in army. He uses the concept of homesickness to move his parent’s house from Korea to United States by creating a fabric sculpture. Trenton Doyle Hancock tells his stories about a group of tragic protagonist mythical creatures by drawing, painting, and installation to mix the world of comic books and history of attraction. He influenced by history of painting, biblical stories that he learned as a child, and his own experience as a boy.

I am interested in Kara Walker’s works. She is well known for discovering the way to depict the gender, sex, and race by using silhouette figures. Most of her works are influenced by romance novel and history of slave. In her works of “Darkytown Rebellion”, she uses overhead projectors to depict the background that goes onto the wall, ceiling and floor of the exhibition space. I think it is interesting how she uses the overhead projectors to interact and also embrace the viewers into her work. The viewers can see their shadows on the wall, ceiling or the floor when they walk into the installation. I think she tries to change the perception of most people think about black people, and some people might think her work is racist. The process, idea of her work and also the way she implicates the viewers make her work is important.

Image Word

Word-Word
The two words I chose were toothpick and sweater. I was trying to find the words that does not relate to one another. When I read these two words together, I picture of sweater that made out of toothpicks or toothpick that when you use it, it makes you sweaty. I think it is cool how the words can come up with variety unique meanings when we put two words together that actually do not relate each other.

Image-Image
The two images I chose were the bull and camel with rider. These two images have the same concept which is a rider with an animal. In terms of relationship between these two images, the bull looks like it wants to attack the camel, and the camel looks like it tries to avoid and go away from it. On the other hand, you may find lots of differences in these two images such as: emotion, pose, and background. These two images show the contrast as you can see, the bull rider looks like almost fall down of the bull and the camel rider looks quiet. You also can see the different in emotion on the bull, it looks mad and emotional, and on the opposite side, camel on the right looks calm. There is also a contrast in the background, on the left side is light gray and on the other side is black.

Image-Word
I chose the image of roulette and the word new age. First, I chose the word clock on the top of roulette image. I thought that was too obvious, so I changed with the word new age. The combination between the image and the word might bring you variety of thoughts. When I see the word, I think about the new age music. The new age music is peaceful that creates relaxation, but on the background you see the roulette which is the casino game that does not create relaxation instead it makes tension. I also see the ball that moves around the wheel makes me think of the movement of the new age. Another way I see it, there is a connection between the random numbers and the word new age. When I think the word new age, I picture someone get "new age" or older, and it relates with the numbers that change as the wheel spinning.
