TuesdaysArtYesPlease is a weekly screening of episodes from the PBS documentary series Art 21. Each episode is organized around a general theme, and profiles four artists or collaborative teams. Students in CPS sections 1, 2 & 4 will be hosting this semester-long event.
Hosting entails:
- designing the posters to advertise for the event and hanging them in the art building the Thursday before the screening (poster templates can be downloaded from the links above)
- doing a tech check the Thursday prior to the screening
- arranging for light refreshments at the screening
- setting up chairs
- giving a brief (1 minute) introduction to the screening
- successfully running AV (cuing the dvd, running the projector, setting the sound at a proper volume)
- starting the screening at 4:55 and having everything cleared out of the room and chairs back in place by 5:55 (because there is a class in the Visual Studies room at 6pm, it is important to be punctual)
- writing an essay on the episode
All of these duties, except for the last one, will be shared by a group of 3-5 students. Sign up for a date to host, and decide with the folks that you are hosting who will take care of which duties.
Instructions for TAYP Essay300-400 words
Give your piece a title
Spend 40% of the essay discussing the connections between the artists, and their relationship to the theme of the screening
Spend 60% of the essay focusing on one artist to give a more in-depth analysis. Address the following points as you write, but try to create a sense of continuity in your writing, so it does not seem as though you are answering a questionnaire:
- Detailed description of a project, series or piece shown in Art 21 that is representative for that artist
- Explanation of what the project/series/piece does, the artist’s motivation & interpretation for the piece, how someone might react to it, and what interests you about it
- Discussion of what makes that project/series/piece and the artist important for you/ in the art world/ in society
The essay is due on the Tuesday following your screening. Feel free to see me during my office hours to get feedback for a draft.
