Instructions

Additional guidelines -added march 4th)))))

An opportunity has arisen to present some of these projects in a public projection in Grand Rapids as part of the SMart Multimedia art festival at the end of march. These projections will be with no sound so I'm taking the sound part away from the project. You can still use sound, but it is not necessary.

Also, here is some further guidance on what makes a good project. I would like everyone to come to the studio with source images for at least one of these two project structures - in addition to your previous ideas.
Two Potential Project Structures:
1. Focus on documenting a performance. This can be doing something mundane and common or something odd and curious. Both can become interesting when reframed over time in the project. The shift in context from the doing - to the documentation of the doing activates things differently (think mirror neurons). Again look for anomalies and visually interesting/multiple idea generators.
2. Document the creation (or destruction) of an image or object.

I appreciate your work thus far on the project but left the studio last week with some questions about how this project was progressing. After some thinking about it I think some of the projects were operating more in a narrative framework. It might be hard to differentiate this, but our habit with time-based media is to think in terms of narrative- a story. In this project we want to focus on process, step-by-step, and the conceptual triggers that get activated. The focus is the process and how the viewer is relating in terms of their own action/thought, not on a character or person. One key here is the point of view of the shots. Focus more on the doing and not on the person.

Sorry for the mid-project changes, but this happens sometimes in the development and refinement of studio work. Also, it will be exciting to have your work considered for this public presentation. I want the projects to be strong to increase your chances of benefitting from this opportunity. -paul - March 4

1. Write instructions for a conceptual, process-based project. These artists may be provide useful points of reference as you compose your instructions:

Convert a 'normal' set of instructions to a 'conceptual project' by paying attention to issues of representation and the ways in which the viewer's, or actor's ideas are triggered and worked with. Often humor or nonsense end up being the basic point of access.

2. Exchange instructions with another student. Write another set of instructions for yourself.

3. Choose one set of instructions and follow them.

4. Document your execution the instructions with 100 images template titles.psd(also on Look Server)

Photographic documentation is highly recommended; you may want to collage documentary images with other visual elements.
Images should be horizontally oriented and 720 x 480 dpi
In addition to your 100 images, include:
1 frame that gives your title
1 frame that credits the instruction writer
1 for artist name
1 frame that gives the date
1 for the instructions (if the instructions are complicated, you may want to use multiple frames

5. Create your movie file instrucitons demo for wiki.pdf(also on Look Server)

create a slide show in iView with these images
create a movie file with iView
Import you movie file into iMovie
Adjust length of clip, so that the movie lasts about 1 min
Export one copy in full resolution
Export one copy in web resolution

Side Note: The resolution of my text was poor, when exporting the movie. To fix this: Export, click on "Expert Settings". Go to "settings" and change the format to MPEG 4, also make sure the compression setting is at "Best". -mike schulz
