Steve Koller: Studio Writing #5

Chip Kidd

Chip Kidd showed us some of his designs, and they were pretty consistently fresh, innovative, and creative. I remember him saying several times that when he was designing a new book cover, he liked to put the idea into a context. He'd say to himself, "How would I see this in daily life?" One example was the cover for "The Thing About Life Is That One Day You Die", where he used a fortune cookie to put a humorous conceptual spin on it.

When Chip told us of how he did the cover for the book titled, "Dry", I was rather surprised at his solution.
Instead of using some high-tech digital wizardry to simulate the drips of ink down a book, he merely printed his book cover,
slapped it on the wall, and threw water at it! Sometimes the best solutions are the simplest.
