Survival Research Laboratories

Producing the most dangerous shows on earth

Survival Research Laboratories is a group of performance artists who create experimental installations with remotely controlled machines, pyrotechnics, and other dynamic elements. These performances are meant to shock the senses and let the audience feel and experience the chaos of war. SRL artists and technicians employ a variety of devices, from reconstructed military inventions like a V1 rocket engine and an air cannon, to the "Hand of God" and Pitching Machine. There are flame-throwers, a hovercraft, and crawling robo-soldiers; all made or modified in their San Francisco-based labs.

SRL was founded in 1978 by Mark Pauline. This group of technicians have produced over 45 shows since 1979. The exhibitions use tele-robotics, military technology, and special effects to create a unique destructive presentation incorporating socio-political satire.
