Rachel Whiteread

Rachel Whiteread

Born in 1963, this British artist is best known for her sculptures, especially "House." Mainly her sculptures are casts. She studied painting in Brighton Polytechnic, studied at the Cyprus College of Art, then studied sculpture at London's Slade School of Art.

This piece is was won her the Turner Prize for best young British artist in 1993. 193 Grove Road was one of the remaining houses set for demolition. There were very mixed reviews, as this piece also won her the K Foundation art award for worst British artist.

Chess set was part of an exhibition featuring ten major contemporary artists, each interpreting in their own way. Whiteread's set contains various domestic objects such as miniature couches, stoves, and refrigerators.
