Archives of previous projects

These include both image and object collections. The assignment is also a bit different than ours - in that each collection had to have between 5 and 9 objects/images.

Project

The context of an object helps to determine how we read the object – what its meaning is, what its importance is, whether it has a function, what can be said about the viewer or the proprietor of the object.

In this exercise you will experiment with many objects and containers to create one final piece that is one object held in one container.

It is important for this project that you allow the display to be the primary mode of communication about your object. To this end, it is important that you choose an object that is slippery, or that has been modified to become slippery. Slipperiness has to do with the multiplicity of meanings that could be attached to the object.

Be creative in the objects and containers you use. Think about the various formal ways that they might compliment one another, and how you can shift the meanings of both the container and the object through different pairings. Keep in mind that the object may appear to be the thing of primary importance, but the container is equally important in this exercise. Think also about the interaction of the viewer as more than a visual thing. As we learned from mirror neuron information, real and imagined movement and touch on the part of the viewer are powerful vehicles for meaning. Or you could say they are meaning.

The size of your object should be about the size of a hand; if yo wish o deviate from this, please speak with me. If you have authorization to use the woodshop, you may use the shop to help manipulate your materials.

Work smart by seeing the world anew. Objects and things are open to our varied imagination of them. In this project we're working with the altered meanings. Be careful to end up with the meanings in the experience of it, not in some kind of mental interpretation.

The purpose of this assignment is to extend our investigation of the practice of juxtaposition and controlling contextual meaning into the 3D realm.
